Blue-tailed Lizard
A blue-tailed creature basks on my adobe wall
we share few differences
we both appear to have dry skin and enjoy the Fall
we both watch quiet things grow
live under a blue sky bowl on santa tierra y santo sol
Blue tailed lizard rests upon a log
I tell it how my ancestors survived a storm
how a gust of wind upsets, saddens, my mother
how my grandmother taught me seven shades of every color
of starving during a New Mexico drought in the 1950s
how blissful I am that those days are gone
Only once did I see the rainbow touch the ground
It was on the day I learned we were all related
the birds that fly in the sky
fish that swim in the brilliance of mountain streams
insects that crawl above and below the ground
all that swims, walks, crawls or flies. |
